Treatments & Evaluations

For some chronic knee, shoulder, and hip pain, surgery may not be the best option. Some people aren’t ready for a joint replacement or aren’t healthy enough to receive one. Joint ablations can provide both time and relief while improving function. For those with persistent pain after a joint replacement, Joint Ablations can still provide relief and help manage your pain. During your appointment with Dr Sederberg, together you will discuss the steps involved in a joint ablation and review if there are any other non-surgical options you may benefit from. Treatments available for the following:

Chronic knee pain
Chronic shoulder pain
Chronic hip pain
Bone-on-bone arthritis
Cortisone injections not providing lasting relief
Gel or Viscosupplementation injections not providing lasting relief
Pain after a joint replacement
Plantar Fascia pain resistant to other treatments
SI joint pain resistant to other treatments
Ablations have helped in the past but the pain has returned

Frequently Asked Questions About Joint Ablations

Descriptive text

Joint ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that uses heat or cold to target and disrupt nerve signals responsible for chronic joint pain. It is commonly used for arthritis-related pain in the knees, hips, shoulders, or spine.

During the procedure, a specialized needle is guided to the targeted nerves using imaging technology. Heat (radiofrequency) or extreme cold (cryoablation) is applied to stop the nerves from sending pain signals to the brain.

Joint ablation is typically recommended for individuals with chronic joint pain who have not found relief through medications, physical therapy, or other treatments. Your doctor may suggest it if other pain management options are ineffective.

You may receive a local anesthetic to numb the area, and sedation may be offered to keep you relaxed. Most patients remain awake but comfortable.

You may feel some pressure or mild discomfort, but the procedure is generally well-tolerated. The area will be numbed to minimize pain.

The procedure typically lasts 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the number of nerves being treated.
